ABBA Arrival - show review

Want to have the time of your life? There's no doubt that Arrival - the award-winning ABBA tribute band - will bring everything you need for the perfect night out. Full of joy and bound to get the party started, their set is jam-packed with all the biggest hits, guaranteed to have you singing and dancing along to have a memorable time. Leading the way by being internationally acclaimed, the group prides itself on being wonderfully authentic and demonstrating extensive expertise in every nuance of the show, highlighted clearly by the longevity of Arrival's success, having been formed in 1995. Since then, they have appeared on radio, TV, and a wide variety of venues worldwide: it becomes easy to see why they are so renowned once you see how well-crafted the production is for yourself.

Whether you're after a great evening with friends or to appreciate the talents and technicalities of the performance, Arrival offers a blend that will leave you hanging on to every moment. With ABBA themselves never failing to create such legendary and beloved tracks, it's a major feat to do them justice, yet it is achieved, being the next best thing to a genuine gig of theirs. Sarah embodies Agnetha Fältskog, bringing versatility to her tones, allowing her to shine through the punchy, powerful, and upbeat tracks, and still give a raw and emotional rendition of 'The Winner Takes It All' with exemplary vocal control. Vicky (or Emma if covering) becomes Anni-Frid Lyngstad, giving a playful and vibrant expression as she lights up the space. In the role of Benny Anderson, Mark eludes mastery of the keys, while Matt, as Björn Ulvaeus, skilfully navigates the guitar. Joining them at the back are the boys on drums and second guitar, thus adding further depth to the band with their ability. All demonstrate a strong connection and a chemistry that conveys comfort and prowess at performing - it's clear they're each made for the stage, and what a privilege it is to see that happen.

ABBA's work consistently combines complex musical sequences to generate their artistry and Arrival presents these dynamically and engagingly throughout. Putting meaning into those like 'Chiquitita' and 'Fernando' beautifully contrasts the electric atmosphere generated from the favourites, such as 'Dancing Queen', 'Mamma Mia' and 'Gimme Gimme Gimme'. Carefully selected, there is not a single track that goes unloved. They go beyond just the vocal and instrumental elements of the compositions to weave in some energetic choreography and meticulously replicated mannerisms that enhance the natural feel of the piece, to properly put on a show worth attending. Using accurate imitations of some of the most iconic outfits, Arrival brings the band to life in full force, fashionably sporting those platform boots and flares from every angle, and seamlessly conducting several costume changes throughout the night. If you're lucky enough to catch a full production (venue-dependent), projections to emulate ABBA's music videos, work nicely in conjunction with the staging as a whole for a truly immersive experience, alongside the fun audience interactions from the stars.

In a show for all ages and with encouragement to enjoy however best suits you (including some epic ensembles if you so desire!), everyone can embrace the pure tonic that Arrival offers. Get your tickets now, so somewhere in the crowd there's you.
