Renowned for his quirky personality and 'ginger Jesus' looks, Alasdair Beckett King has been crafting a space for himself on the comedy scene for a number of years now, appearing across 8 out of 10 Cats, Mock the Week, Radio 4's The News Quiz, and more. Amongst his solo endeavours, Alasdair Beckett King: The King of Crumbs names his current UK tour. The title, much like Alasdair's being, has no real explanation.

Beginning the set by proving the ability to successfully identify with any given time period, ABK's mythical presence is impalpable (and causes a lot of hair envy). Ahead, a mirage of all variety - physical, prop, storytelling, downright silly... even sad jokes- capture the room in anticipation, soon learning to expect the unexpected since you never know what will evoke a laugh next. With consistent creativity in delivery, it's a joy in itself to watch Alasdair at work. His unorthodox character is clearly rooted in a natural ability to present himself laden in wit.

The on-screen resources and sound effects demonstrate the refined order of a prepared set, but there's an essence of audience rapport that mitigates stagnantation by making it seem like a chat with a friend. Laced with Gen X nostalgia, even throughout the pre-show soundtrack, this brings delight to those who 'get it', without disengaging those that don't. From comparing dads to ducks, to noisy upstairs neighbours; traditional grandads, impressive vacuum cleaner imitations, and trusting the dentist, there really is a bit of everything. Given the immediate state of the world, it was a welcome escape to have minimal gags needing to draw on current affairs.

Alasdair Beckett King has been a long-standing asset to the Leicester Comedy Festival, and this year has been no exception. As an underrated act, his avante garde approach might not be for everyone, but certainly deserves a try - you may be surprised at the refreshing nuance that is irreplaceable by others on the circuit.
