Just when we all need a fresh hit of upbeat fun, the 2004 cult classic film, 13 Going On 30 has been reimagined for the stage for the first time. Exuding its timeless flair, the piece offers a nostalgic reminder for previous fans of the plot, but can be enjoyed by all alike. Mixing a fantastic cast with original songs and a heap of charm, what’s not to love?
The legendary Grace Mouat, previously known for her impressive stints as 'super-swing' in Six and cover lead in & Juliet, amongst many other great titles, plays the integral role of Lucy and has kindly offered an insight into what this part means to her.
What has been the most exciting part of joining the 13 Going On 30 cast so far?
There have been so many exciting moments, Gala night was very special, but to be honest, the most exciting moments for me are watching the creative process in rehearsals. Our creative team have been so collaborative and have given us a lot of creative license to play and bring ourselves to these characters, which is something I’m very grateful for. I had a real pinch me moment whilst learning a new reprise in act two with our amazing writers, Alan [Zachary] and Michael [Weiner] and our fabulous music team- Alan [Williams], Jerome [Van Den Berghe] and Amy [Shackcloth]. I was watching them write a new piece of music, and we were working together on timing, notes and accompaniment. I left the room feeling very lucky to be a small part of the early days of such an exciting show.
What was your relationship with the hit film prior to this reimagining?
I always watched it as a kid growing up. It was the ultimate comfort chick flick at a sleepover. But I didn’t rediscover it until I did the workshop two years ago. All of the iconic lines and moments came flooding back.
What has been the most challenging part of stepping into a role that many fans already know and love?
There is always the pressure of playing an iconic role. My version of Lucy is very inspired by Judy Greer, but I have also made it my own when I can. I think it’s important to keep the familiarity, but find your own version. I guess my biggest challenge was making a character which works well with small, subtle and catty moments playable to a huge theatre of 2000 people! You have to play for the circle!
How did you find the rehearsal process and constant reshaping of the production as it develops?
It’s my favourite part of creating a new show! You have to have that ‘just go for it’ attitude and embrace changes. You really can’t get two attached to any moment, as you have no idea what could change the next day! That’s all part of the excitement of being in an original cast. In the words of our incredible Musical Supervisor, Alan Williams, ‘Change is good!’
How does the staging and original soundtrack help tell the story in ways the film couldn’t, making this unique?
The story lends itself so well to a musical, and the adaptation has felt pretty seamless. It feels like its own show in its own right!
A great example would be the iconic thriller moment. Jen Weber’s choreography is so fresh and exciting, especially in that number. Also, Jenna’s presentation song in Act 2. It’s wonderful and has a very important message about beauty standards, embracing yourself just as you are and not following trends we don’t need to!
How does the show capture a nostalgic spirit, yet offer itself to be loved by a new generation?
The show feels like era-less on purpose because the story is just so universal. There truly is something in there for everyone and every age. We have the iconic moments from the film that you know and love. I feel like Jen [Weber]’s choreography has definitely lifted the modern edge, and her commercial style lends itself so well to the show’s music.
What message from 13 Going On 30 feels most relevant to audiences today?
Check in with your inner child and make them proud. Embrace your true self. ‘Not a thing can dim your star when you OWN IT’!
If you could go back to being 13 for a day, what advice would you give your younger self?
You are more than the way you look! Surround yourself with people who encourage each other! Trust the process!
What do you see in the future for this new musical?
West End, Broadway, then THE WORLD! I can’t wait to see where this new musical heads!
I'm sure we all share the vision of the big things to come for this one. Many thanks to Grace for chatting with us; it's so lovely to hear from you. Have a fantastic rest of the run!
